Believe it or not, a beautiful one-of-a-kind necklace is actually super easy to make! In this tutorial I’ll show you exactly how to create a simple chain necklace that you can totally customize to fit your style. Don’t worry: no jewelry making experience required, so let’s get started!
What you’ll need:
- Thin curb chain
- Lobster clasp (1 per necklace)
- Jump rings
- Necklace extender (optional)
- Charms/Pendants (optional)
- Jewelry pliers (with wire cutter)
Step 1: Take your chain and measure how long you’d like your necklace to be. It helps to stand in front of a mirror and wrap the chain around your neck so you can see where the necklace will sit. Make your necklace as long or short as you want! Once you’ve figured out what style of necklace you’re going for, cut the chain with your wire cutters.
Step 2: Open up one of your jump rings. To do this, locate the break in the ring and grip one side with your jewelry pliers and the other side with your finger and thumb. Next, hold the jump ring steady with your fingers while you simply twist it open with your pliers. Tip: twist your pliers as if you’re revving a motorcycle or doing the Crank That Soulja Boy dance!
Step 3: Once your jump ring is open, take one end of your chain and loop the jump ring through it. To make this the end of the necklace, you can either leave it as-is or add a necklace extender so that your necklace can be a little longer if needed. To close the jump ring, just twist it the opposite way until both ends meet back up.
Step 4: With the other end of your chain, attach another jump ring as well as a lobster clasp. Close up the jump ring and try on your necklace! You can either stop here and just wear your simple chain necklace or continue to the next step to add some pizzazz!
Step 5: To add charms or pendants to your necklace, just open the jump ring (most charms come with jump rings already on them) and attach it to the chain just like you did with the lobster clasp. If you want your charm to slide around on the chain all you have to do is put the chain through the jump ring.
